Reeva Cutting of Cutting Edge Digital specialises in digital marketing services for business in Australia. Prior to starting up her own agency, she worked as a Digital Marketing Executive for 3 years, and was also a Business Analyst working out of the United Kingdom for 8 years.
What do you do daily?
My day can include checking my clients’ AdWords (digital advertising) accounts and making improvements, checking their social media accounts, and writing contents for their websites. I also optimise websites, to improve their rankings on search engines. There are also the day-to-day operations for the business, including responding to emails and preparing quotes for prospective clients!
What are some of the skills you need for your role?
Focus is key in this role – it’s so easy to find yourself hopping between multiple jobs and then forgetting what you were actually supposed to be doing, which also ties in to planning. Then there’s a need to be flexible, because you’ll be doing so many things in one day and no matter how much you try to stick to a strict schedule, you’ll find new priorities popping up almost daily. When you’re working with clients, people skills are important as you’ll need to explain things to business owners who might not have a lot of knowledge in this space. And for the role, you’ll also need technical knowledge, so get to know websites, Google products, and social media.
What advice would you give to someone interested in your role?
Keep your digital marketing skills current and stay up-to-date with changes; it helps you move forward in the industry, and provides a competitive edge.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to enter this area of work?
Read the latest news in areas relevant to digital marketing, so you’re to date with the changes in the industry as the playing field constantly changes. You should also do as many free courses and exams as you can; for example, Google offers a range of AdWords and Analytics exams which are free to do.

Depends on the friend, though probably a 4!
What did you study i.e. your level of study, and major if applicable?
I obtained a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Film and History!
What did you do that perhaps were the most successful initiatives to land your current role?
Keeping my knowledge and skills up to date allowed me to move from being an employee to running my own agency. In terms of moving from my old industry to my new one, I had a willingness to learn and a keen interest in digital marketing which I believe helped me land an entry-level role in this industry.
Do you need professional registration for your current role?
Professional registration isn’t formally required. Google qualifications do help if you are new to the industry, and are essential for experienced roles.
